When a system speaks with one voice, the whole state listens.

On paper, the ask was simple: increase in-state undergrad applications across all 23 California State University campuses. 

But the real opportunity was bigger. CSU needed a unifying platform that could elevate the system as a whole without erasing the unique voices of each campus. A story of collective impact, told in a way that California’s students and families could feel. 

The Insight

People don’t choose a university system. They choose belonging.

Across thousands of interviews and surveys, one truth stood out: students, families, and communities weren’t moved by rankings. They were moved by pride. By possibility. By the idea that education could change everything for them and for the next generation.

CSU had incredible stats, but data alone wasn’t going to shift perception. The path forward wasn’t more informational. It was more emotional.

The Solution

We started by listening. More than 3,000 Californians shared what they knew and felt about California State University.

We learned that most people recognized a campus, but not the system. That academic quality was misunderstood. That financial aid felt out of reach. And that the CSU story was missing its emotional core.

So we built a new platform to tell it:

”23 Universities. 1 Mission.”  

It became the foundation for everything: a shared message rooted in access, excellence, and impact.

We didn’t stop at messaging. We reconfigured the design system to reflect the unique identities of the 23 campuses. And we rolled out a paid media campaign to generate awareness and answer why a prospective student and their families should choose CSU. The campaign strategy leaned on a surround sound approach across social, digital, outdoor, and in-school spaces so the message showed up everywhere students were.

Each campus made it its own. But ultimately, the system spoke together, confidently and clearly.
