Media performance is all in the 'AND'.

Marketers crave distinction. And in a discipline built to “sell,” positioning ideas against one another can feel almost inevitable.

We have brand versus performance. Reputation versus recruitment. Traditional versus nontraditional. Maybe it’s no surprise, then, that the versus becomes the point, turning complementary priorities into competing ones.

And yet, the environment is only getting harder to navigate: more media channels and rising privacy restrictions and constricting category dynamics and increasingly cluttered media environments. And the short-term signals marketers use to decide where to keep investing are becoming less clear.

It’s a key reason many institutions struggle with proof: how is brand investment delivering enrollment outcomes? What shows a campaign is resonating, shifting perceptions, or sparking action?

When teams, budgets, and metrics are built to compete, you get an incomplete picture and a slower path to impact.

The solution is to not focus on the versus, and instead focus on the and.

And is where effectiveness compounds instead of competes, and what gives marketers a way through an increasingly complex environment. What’s critical is getting the balance right.

This matters because the path to purchase is long, consideration sets form well before a decision, and paid media overloaded at the bottom of the funnel plateaus fast. A balanced approach considers both capturing and establishing and maintaining demand.

Evidence across industry supports this view. The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising’s case study database shows response rates rise considerably once brand communications enter the mix, meaning every dollar spent chasing enrollment later works harder. And while long-term brand campaigns run 25% lower ROI than short-term efforts, they’re 75% more likely to deliver the kind of outsized growth a board actually wants to see.

Our own category confirms it: all recent studies show, even despite AI search, most students begin their college search with a school already in mind. Per EducationDynamics, nearly 60% of prospective students start with schools they know, rather than programs (up from just 13% ten years ago).

That’s brand.

Brand shapes the shortlist. Enrollment drives the action.

You don’t need an institutional overhaul to prove the and is working. You need the right measures, read together.
